CA or CFA in India: Which Qualification Fits the Finance Work You Want?

CA and CFA are both respected finance qualifications, but they train you for different work. The CA route under ICAI covers accounting, assurance, taxation, law, costing and financial management, with two years of compulsory practical training. The CFA Program run by CFA Institute concentrates on investment analysis, valuation, portfolio management and ethics. The right choice depends less on which credential sounds stronger and more on the work you want to be good at five years from now.

This guide compares the two on syllabus, entry routes, training, time and cost, using ICAI's New Scheme of Education and Training and CFA Institute's published programme pages, and then works through three realistic profiles.

How the CA course is structured

The CA course has three levels. The papers under the new scheme, as listed on ICAI's syllabus pages, are:

LevelPapers
FoundationAccounting; Business Laws; Quantitative Aptitude; Business Economics
IntermediateGroup I: Advanced Accounting; Corporate and Other Laws; Taxation (Income-tax and GST). Group II: Cost and Management Accounting; Auditing and Ethics; Financial Management and Strategic Management
FinalGroup I: Financial Reporting; Advanced Financial Management; Advanced Auditing, Assurance and Professional Ethics. Group II: Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation; Indirect Tax Laws (GST, Customs and FTP); Integrated Business Solutions (multidisciplinary case study with strategic management)

Key rules from ICAI's FAQs on the New Scheme of Education and Training:

  • Foundation route: registration is possible after Class 10, with at least four months of registration before the first day of the exam month; the student must have appeared in Class 12 before taking the Foundation exam.
  • Direct entry to Intermediate: open to commerce graduates or postgraduates with at least 55% marks and other graduates or postgraduates with at least 60%, with a minimum study period of eight months before the first day of the exam month.
  • Practical training: 2 years, starting after passing both groups of Intermediate and completing the four-week Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (ICITSS). Industrial training of 9 to 12 months is permitted in the last part of the 2 years.
  • Before Final: the four-week Advanced ICITSS is completed after practical training and before the Final exam. Self-Paced Online Modules are also required: Sets A and B are mandatory, and Sets C and D are chosen from electives.
  • Exam frequency: CA exams are held three times a year, in January, May and September.

The breadth is the point. CA prepares you for statutory audit, tax practice, corporate reporting, controllership, compliance and broad finance roles in India.

How the CFA Program is structured

According to CFA Institute's CFA Program curriculum page, the programme has three levels built on ten topic areas: Ethical and Professional Standards, Quantitative Methods, Economics, Financial Statement Analysis, Corporate Finance, Equities, Fixed Income, Derivatives and Risk Management, Alternative Investments, and Portfolio Construction.

  • Level I and II: spread across all topics, with weights ranging from about 5% to 15% per topic.
  • Level III: asset allocation (15% to 20%), portfolio construction (15% to 20%), performance measurement (5% to 10%), derivatives and risk management (10% to 15%), ethics (10% to 15%) and a chosen pathway (30% to 35%). The three pathways are Portfolio Management, Private Markets and Private Wealth.
  • Practical Skills Modules: at least one module must be completed at each level to receive the exam result.
  • Study time: CFA Institute recommends about 300 hours per level.

To use the charter, a candidate must pass all three levels and the Practical Skills Modules, and, as set out on the charterholder requirements page, complete at least 4,000 hours of relevant work experience over a minimum of 36 months. The work must be directly involved in the investment decision-making process or produce work that informs it, and can be done before, during or after the programme. Two or three professional references and membership of CFA Institute complete the process.

Working the numbers: time and cost

CA timeline for a commerce graduate

A commerce graduate with 60% registers directly for Intermediate on 1 September 2026. The minimum eight-month study period is met for the May 2027 exam (September to April). If both groups are cleared in May 2027 and ICITSS is done by July, practical training can run from 1 August 2027 to 31 July 2029. Advanced ICITSS and the Final exam follow, subject to ICAI's eligibility rules for the Final. Realistically, a first Final attempt comes around three years after registration, and every failed group adds at least one exam cycle of four months.

CFA study load for a working professional

At the recommended 300 hours per level, three levels need about 900 hours. A candidate who can protect 15 hours a week needs about 20 weeks per level, or 60 weeks of study in total, before gaps between exam windows. At 12 hours a week, each level takes about 25 weeks.

CFA work experience

The charter requires 4,000 hours over at least 36 months. A full-time analyst working about 176 hours a month would cross 4,000 hours in about 23 months, but the 36-month minimum still applies. Averaged over 36 months, 4,000 hours is about 111 hours a month, so part-time relevant work can count if it is spread over a longer period.

CFA exam fees

CFA Institute puts the exam cost of all three levels at USD 3,520 to 4,570, depending on whether each level is registered at the early or standard rate. That is roughly USD 1,173 to 1,523 per level on average, and registering early at every level saves about USD 1,050 in total. Check the CFA Institute dates and fees page before registering, as fees change by exam window. Study material, coaching and travel are extra.

Three profiles and what fits

A student aiming for audit, tax or controllership

CA is the direct route. The syllabus covers financial reporting, auditing, direct and indirect tax, and corporate law, and the two years of practical training build the working experience that audit and tax roles expect. CFA adds little to day-to-day statutory work.

A graduate aiming for equity research or asset management

CFA is closer to the work: equities, fixed income, derivatives, portfolio construction and the Level III pathways map directly to research and investment roles. The charter's experience requirement is also met by the job itself. CA is broader than necessary unless the person values its accounting depth.

A CA moving into valuation, transaction advisory or equity research

This is where the combination helps. A CA already reads financial statements closely and understands tax and reporting; CFA adds valuation, fixed income, derivatives and portfolio theory. Since the CA Final already covers Financial Reporting and Advanced Financial Management, the Financial Statement Analysis and Corporate Finance parts of CFA Level I will feel familiar, which can make the first level quicker.

Does doing both make sense?

For some careers, yes: equity research, investment banking, valuation, transaction advisory and certain corporate finance roles reward both accounting depth and investment skills. But doing both is not automatically better. Each route demands substantial preparation, and pursuing both without a clear role in mind costs years. If your target role sits inside audit, tax or controllership, deeper domain experience usually adds more than a second credential. If your target is portfolio management, the CFA's investment focus matters more than CA's statutory breadth.

A decision checklist

  1. Name three target roles you would realistically like to hold in five years.
  2. Read ten real job descriptions for those roles and note which qualification they ask for.
  3. Match the syllabus to the work: compare the paper lists above with what those roles do daily.
  4. Plan the time: CA's 2-year practical training is built into the course; CFA's 300 hours per level usually sit alongside a job.
  5. Check the experience path: can your current or next job count towards the CFA's 4,000 hours?
  6. Sequence, do not stack: if both help, finish one strong foundation before starting the other.
  7. Avoid salary-only decisions: pay varies widely by role, employer, city and experience.
