57th GST Council Meeting Set for September 12; Officers to Meet a Day Earlier as Agenda Is Awaited

The 57th meeting of the GST Council is scheduled for 12 September 2026 in New Delhi, with the main Council session starting at 11:00 AM. An officers’ meeting is scheduled a day earlier, on 11 September 2026 at 11:00 AM. The meeting notice is contained in Office Memorandum F. No. 1392/57thGSTCM/GSTC/2026, dated 28 August 2026.

For chartered accountants, GST practitioners, finance teams and businesses, the immediate significance is not that a tax-rate or compliance change has already been approved. The notice itself does not announce any decision. Instead, it formally starts the run-up to the next Council meeting and says that the detailed venue and agenda items will be communicated separately.

What the meeting notice confirms

- The 57th GST Council meeting will be held in New Delhi on 12 September 2026 from 11:00 AM onwards.

- An officers’ meeting will be held in New Delhi on 11 September 2026 from 11:00 AM onwards.

- The agenda and detailed venue are to be communicated later.

- The communication is signed by Arvind Shrivastava, Secretary to the Government of India and ex-officio Secretary to the GST Council.

- Copies were addressed to the offices of the Union Finance Minister and Minister of State for Finance, State and Union Territory Chief Secretaries, the CBIC Chairman and the GSTN CEO.

Why professionals should track the agenda separately

GST Council meetings can lead to recommendations on tax rates, exemptions, procedural rules, return filing, registration, refunds and other compliance matters, but a meeting notice by itself should not be treated as a policy decision. That distinction matters for advisers communicating with clients: no rate, form, threshold or effective date should be changed in compliance systems merely because a topic is reported as likely to be discussed.

Reputable current reporting has indicated that registration simplification and greater automation of cancellation procedures may feature in the policy discussion. However, the official meeting memorandum says the agenda will be shared later. These reported possibilities therefore remain expected agenda items, not confirmed Council recommendations.

What CAs and finance teams can do now

Tax teams should watch for the official agenda before the officers’ meeting and then distinguish three stages of information: proposals placed before the Council, recommendations announced after the meeting, and legally effective changes issued later through notifications, circulars or rule amendments. That sequencing can prevent premature client alerts and incorrect ERP or tax-engine changes.

The GST Council’s official meetings portal remains the primary page to monitor for meeting material. The specific memorandum was also reproduced publicly after being issued by the Council Secretariat. GST Council meetings portal.

The confirmed news for now is the calendar: officers on 11 September and the 57th GST Council meeting on 12 September. The next high-value update will be the official agenda and, after the meeting, the Council’s actual recommendations. Professionals should treat any pre-meeting speculation as provisional until those primary materials are released.

Key takeaway

Fresh official meeting schedule with high near-term search interest among GST professionals before agenda and recommendations are released.
