RBI: to Conduct ₹1.5 Lakh Crore 3-Day VRRR Auction on August 21

The Reserve Bank of India has announced a three-day Variable Rate Reverse Repo (VRRR) auction for ₹1,50,000 crore under the Liquidity Adjustment Facility, to be conducted on Friday, August 21, 2026. The central bank said the operation was decided after a review of current and evolving liquidity conditions.

For banks, treasury teams and money-market participants, the notice is immediately actionable because the bidding window is short: 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM on August 21. The funds absorbed through the operation are scheduled to reverse on Monday, August 24, 2026.

Key auction terms announced by RBI

- Notified amount: ₹1,50,000 crore.

- Tenor: 3 days.

- Auction date: August 21, 2026.

- Bidding window: 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM.

- Reversal date: August 24, 2026.

- RBI reference: Press Release 2026-2027/932, dated August 20, 2026.

What the VRRR operation means operationally

RBI has specifically stated that the operational guidelines prescribed in its February 13, 2020 press release will continue to apply. Under those guidelines, the auction is conducted on the RBI's Core Banking Solution, the e-Kuber platform. The minimum bid amount is ₹1 crore and bids are placed in multiples of ₹1 crore.

Banks may place multiple bids and quote rates in percentage terms up to two decimal places. Successful bids are accepted at their respective bid rates. The standing operational framework also provides that bids at or above the repo rate are rejected, while bids are arranged in ascending order to determine the cut-off rate corresponding to the notified amount.

If more than one successful bid is received at the cut-off rate, pro-rata allotment may be used. RBI also retains the right to absorb marginally more than the notified amount because of rounding effects, or to absorb less than the notified amount without assigning reasons.

Why treasury and finance teams should track the August 21 operation

The immediate relevance is not a change in regulation but a live liquidity-management action. Participating banks need to align bids with their short-term liquidity position, rate view and collateral availability within the specified half-hour window. For finance and market professionals following short-term rates, the auction size and accepted rates can also provide a current signal about liquidity conditions and bank demand to place funds with the central bank.

The underlying 2020 guidelines state that eligible collateral and applicable haircuts remain the same as for Liquidity Adjustment Facility operations, and that the reversal occurs at the start of day on the scheduled reversal date. RBI's August 20 announcement says those operating conditions remain unchanged for this auction.

What participating banks should check before bidding

The most important numbers for August 21 are ₹1.5 lakh crore, three days and a 9:30 AM-10:00 AM bidding window. Banks and treasury teams intending to participate should use the RBI's e-Kuber process and refer to the current auction notice together with the standing operational guidelines before submitting bids.
