RBI Releases Sovereign Gold Bond Premature Redemption Calendar for October 2026-March 2027
Read Time:
The Reserve Bank of India has released the official calendar for premature redemption of eligible Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) tranches falling due between October 1, 2026 and March 31, 2027. The calendar, published on August 21, 2026, gives investors tranche-wise premature-redemption dates as well as the period during which requests can be submitted to the relevant receiving office, NSDL, CDSL or RBI Retail Direct.
The announcement is important for investors who do not want to wait until the final maturity of their SGBs. RBI has reiterated that premature redemption is permitted after five years from the date of issue, in line with paragraph 13 of the Consolidated Procedural Guidelines on the Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme issued through circular IDMD.CDD.1100/14.04.050/2021-22 dated October 22, 2021.
What RBI has announced
The new calendar covers 32 SGB tranches, spanning issues from 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22. Each tranche has a specified premature-redemption date and a separate submission window during which investors must lodge their request.
The first redemption event in the new calendar is for SGB 2019-20 Series V, issued on October 15, 2019. Its premature-redemption date is October 15, 2026, while investors can submit requests from September 14, 2026 through October 5, 2026. Another early window applies to 2020-21 Series VII, issued on October 20, 2020: its premature-redemption date is October 19, 2026 and the request window runs from September 19 to October 9, 2026.
Key October and November 2026 redemption dates
Several tranches become eligible during October and November. SGB 2020-21 Series I has a premature-redemption date of October 28, 2026, with requests accepted from September 26 through October 19. The 2020-21 Series VIII tranche is scheduled for November 18, with requests from October 17 to November 9. The 2020-21 Series II tranche follows on November 19, with a request window of October 19-November 9. SGB 2021-22 Series I is due on November 25, with requests from October 23 through November 16.
December 2026 schedule
December contains multiple redemption dates. SGB 2021-22 Series II is due on December 1, with requests from October 31 to November 21. Series VIII of 2021-22 is due December 7, with requests between November 6 and November 27, while Series III of 2021-22 is due December 8 and has a November 7-30 request window.
SGB 2020-21 Series VII is scheduled for December 10, while 2019-20 Series I is due December 11. The latter's request window runs from November 9 to December 1. SGB 2020-21 Series III is due December 16, with requests from November 13 to December 7.
January to March 2027 windows
The RBI calendar continues through the first quarter of 2027. SGB 2020-21 Series IX is due January 5, 2027, followed by 2020-21 Series IV on January 14, 2019-20 Series II on January 16, 2021-22 Series IX on January 18, 2020-21 Series X on January 19 and 2021-22 Series IV on January 20.
February includes 2020-21 Series XI on February 9; both 2019-20 Series IX and 2020-21 Series V on February 11; 2019-20 Series III on February 12; and 2021-22 Series V on February 17. In March, the schedule includes 2021-22 Series VI on March 5, both 2020-21 Series VI and 2021-22 Series X on March 8, 2020-21 Series XII on March 9, 2019-20 Series X on March 11 and 2019-20 Series IV on March 17.
What investors should do
Investors should first identify the exact SGB tranche and issue date shown in their holding records, then match it with the RBI calendar. The request must be submitted during the specified window rather than merely on the redemption date. RBI specifically lists Receiving Offices, NSDL, CDSL and RBI Retail Direct as channels through which requests may be submitted, depending on how the bond is held.
Investors should also avoid treating the published dates as completely immutable. RBI has cautioned that the calendar may change if there are unscheduled holidays. Anyone planning an exit should therefore re-check the official RBI communication close to the request window and follow the instructions of the relevant depository, receiving office or RBI Retail Direct account.
The August 21 calendar gives SGB holders a clear advance schedule to plan premature redemption over the next six months. For finance professionals and advisers assisting clients with investment records, the key control point is not just the redemption date but the request-submission window attached to each tranche. Missing that window can affect the ability to use the scheduled premature-redemption opportunity, so tranche-level reconciliation and timely investor instructions will be essential.
