SEBI Modifies Online Bond Platform Rules, Expands Product Scope and Eases Compliance Requirements
Read Time:
What has changed
SEBI has modified the regulatory framework for Online Bond Platform Providers (OBPPs) through a circular dated 14 August 2026, introducing ease-of-doing-business measures and changes to the products that can be made available through online bond platforms.
What changed
The revised framework expands the scope for OBPPs to facilitate certain products regulated through the International Financial Services Centres framework, subject to applicable conditions and clear regulatory treatment. It also permits offering eligible tax-saving bonds associated with section 54EC of the Income-tax Act, 1961 and the corresponding provision under the Income Tax Act, 2025.
The circular also modifies compliance-officer requirements for OBPPs, easing the earlier framework while retaining the need for appropriate compliance capability under SEBI's regulatory structure.
Why it matters
For online bond platforms, the changes can broaden product availability and reduce specific operating constraints. Compliance teams will need to map the revised framework against platform disclosures, product onboarding, investor communication and internal responsibility matrices.
Effective compliance action
OBPPs and advisers should review the exact circular, update internal policies and platform disclosures where required, and ensure that products offered through the platform are correctly classified under the relevant SEBI and IFSCA frameworks.
