₹2.5 Lakh Crore 7-Day VRRR Auction

The Reserve Bank of India will conduct a ₹2,50,000 crore Variable Rate Reverse Repo auction on Monday, 24 August 2026, as part of its liquidity-management operations. The auction will have a tenor of seven days and will reverse on 31 August 2026.

Auction terms announced by RBI

RBI has set the bidding window from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM on 24 August. The notified amount is ₹2.5 lakh crore, making the operation material for banks and treasury desks monitoring short-term liquidity conditions.

The central bank said the decision was taken after a review of current and evolving liquidity conditions. It did not announce a change in the operating framework for the auction.

What a VRRR operation does

A Variable Rate Reverse Repo allows RBI to absorb surplus liquidity from the banking system through an auction-based mechanism in which eligible participants submit bids. Unlike a fixed-rate absorption window, the auction determines the accepted rate through the bidding process subject to the prevailing framework.

For treasury and money-market participants, the notified size, tenor and cut-off outcome can provide useful signals about the quantum of liquidity that the central bank is seeking to absorb and the market's willingness to place funds with RBI for the specified period.

Existing operational framework continues

RBI stated that the operational guidelines issued on 13 February 2020 for Variable Rate Reverse Repo auctions will remain unchanged for this operation. That means participants should use the existing auction procedures rather than expect a separate process for the August 24 operation.

What finance teams should track next

The immediate numbers to watch are the total bids received, the amount accepted and the resulting cut-off rate when RBI publishes the auction result. Together with other liquidity operations, these data help banks, treasurers and market participants assess near-term money-market conditions.

Key takeaway

RBI's August 24 operation is a seven-day VRRR with a notified amount of ₹2.5 lakh crore, a 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM bidding window and reversal on August 31. The announcement is a current liquidity-management action rather than a change to the underlying VRRR framework.
