RBI Reports $72.85 Billion Forex Inflows Under Special Swap Facility; FCNR(B) Window Closes August 31
Read Time:
The Reserve Bank of India has reported USD 72.848 billion of forex inflows under its special USD-INR swap facility covering eligible FCNR(B) deposits, external commercial borrowings and overseas foreign currency borrowings. The data, released on 22 August 2026, reflects positions reported by Authorised Dealer banks through 21 August.
FCNR(B) deposits account for most of the reported inflows
According to RBI, FCNR(B) deposits contributed USD 65.397 billion, making them by far the largest component. Overseas Foreign Currency Borrowings, or OFCBs, accounted for USD 4.860 billion, while External Commercial Borrowings, or ECBs, contributed USD 2.591 billion.
Together, the three categories add up to the reported total of USD 72.848 billion. For bank treasury teams and finance professionals, the composition is notable because the facility is operating with different closing dates for deposits and borrowings.
Key deadlines under the special facility
RBI introduced the special USD-INR forex swap facility on 8 June 2026. In its latest release, the central bank reiterated that the scheme remains open for eligible FCNR(B) deposits only until 31 August 2026. For ECB and OFCB inflows, the facility remains open until 31 December 2026.
That means the FCNR(B) leg is now in its final days, while the borrowing windows have a longer runway. Banks and corporate finance teams using the facility should therefore distinguish clearly between the applicable cut-off dates rather than treating all three inflow categories alike.
Why the update matters
The latest disclosure provides a current official snapshot of the scale at which the facility is being used. It also gives practitioners a clean reconciliation point for the three eligible categories: FCNR(B), OFCB and ECB. The numbers are reported in US dollar millions and are based on information submitted by Authorised Dealer banks.
For CAs working with banks, treasury functions, external borrowings or foreign-currency funding, the practical point is the combination of the latest aggregate data and the live eligibility window. Any transaction being considered under the scheme should be checked against RBI's original facility terms and subsequent announcements, including the relevant cut-off date.
RBI's August 22 update shows USD 72.848 billion of reported inflows under the special swap facility as of August 21, with FCNR(B) deposits contributing about nine-tenths of the total. The immediate deadline to watch is August 31 for the FCNR(B) leg; ECB and OFCB inflows remain eligible under the announced window through December 31, 2026.
