Placement posters feature investment banks and private equity funds, but those take very few people a year. Most jobs after MBA Finance are in FP&A, credit, risk, advisory, research support or finance operations, and a growing number of graduates aim for regulator and public sector roles through competitive exams. Here is how the paths compare at entry, what the work involves and what gets you hired.
The paths at a glance

Roles that hire in volume
FP&A and business finance
Planning teams build budgets and forecasts, compare actual results with plan every month and explain the gaps; business finance partners sit with a product line or region and help its managers decide on pricing, investment and cost. Capability centres in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Gurugram and Pune hire heavily for both, as do corporate head offices. The role suits people who like connecting numbers to decisions. Current openings: FP&A jobs.
Credit
Credit analysts spread financial statements, analyse cash flows, judge management and industry risk, and recommend limits in a credit note that a committee reviews. Large lenders in Mumbai and Pune recruit steadily into credit, and rating agencies do similar analysis for ratings. Few early roles teach you to read a business as quickly.
Risk
Market, credit, liquidity and operational risk teams measure what could go wrong and report it to management and regulators. Banks’ capability centres in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune and Chennai hire MBAs into these teams in large numbers, and the work leans increasingly on data. See risk jobs.
Advisory
Risk advisory, deals support and finance transformation teams at the Big 4 and other firms work on projects lasting weeks or months, which builds breadth and a network fast. Many advisory professionals move to industry corporate finance after three to five years. See advisory jobs.
Finance operations
Record to report, payables, receivables and reconciliation teams employ the largest number of finance freshers and pay the least at entry. Choose an employer where people regularly move into controllership, reporting or FP&A after a year or two, and ask about that path in the interview. See R2R jobs.
Roles with fewer seats
Research and investment banking support
Global banks and research firms run large teams in India that build models, prepare pitch material and write sector notes for their global businesses. Front-office investment banking roles in India are few and highly competitive, but these support teams hire in larger numbers and are how most people reach markets work.
Corporate finance and treasury
Capital allocation, funding, investor relations support, M&A support, cash management, foreign exchange and interest-rate hedging all sit at head offices, mainly in Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Pune. Fresher seats are limited; many people reach these roles after a few years in advisory, credit or FP&A. See corporate finance jobs and treasury jobs.
Regulator and public sector routes
Several of the most sought-after finance jobs in India are filled through competitive examinations rather than campus or job portals:
- Reserve Bank of India, Grade B officer: recruited through a multi-stage examination and interview; notices are published on the RBI website.
- SEBI, Grade A officer (Assistant Manager): recruited through phased examinations and interviews announced on the SEBI website.
- NABARD, Grade A officer: recruited through examinations announced on the NABARD website.
- Public sector banks: the common IBPS specialist officer exam has no finance post (it covers IT, agriculture, law, HR, marketing and Rajbhasha officers), so banks recruit finance and credit specialists, such as credit officers, through their own notices. Many finance MBAs instead take the probationary officer exams, IBPS PO and SBI PO, which are open to any graduate and lead into credit and branch banking; see IBPS and SBI Careers.
- PSU management trainees (finance): public sector undertakings recruit through their own notices, some accepting an MBA in Finance.
Each notice sets its own eligibility, age limits and pay scale, and some ask for a degree or an AIU-recognised equivalent rather than any PGDM. Preparation runs for months, so many candidates combine it with a first private-sector job.
What the first year looks like in three common paths
FP&A analyst
The month starts with the close: pulling actual results, comparing them with budget and forecast, and writing variance commentary for your business unit. Mid-month you update forecasts with input from managers and answer ad hoc questions on costs, headcount or pricing. Budget season adds weeks of modelling and review. The first six months are mostly about learning how the business works and what managers need from you.
Credit analyst
Each new proposal arrives with financial statements, projections and a relationship manager’s view. You spread the financials, analyse the business and its cash flows, identify the key risks and draft a credit note. Some weeks you present to a credit committee; others you review existing borrowers’ performance and covenants. By the end of the year you should be able to form a view on a business within a day.
Advisory analyst
Work comes in projects: a controls review, a due diligence, a process redesign. You gather data, build analyses, draft report sections and join client meetings, with hours that rise near deadlines. The first year is tiring and, for most people, unusually educational.
Credentials worth considering
A CFA pass helps for research, investment and some treasury roles; the FRM for market, credit and liquidity risk; and certain securities-market roles in broking and wealth require specific NISM certifications. For FP&A, advisory and operations, advanced Excel, a BI tool and SQL count for more than another certificate.
Frequently asked
Which is the best job after MBA Finance?
For pay at entry, front-office and consulting roles; for the widest set of openings and steady growth, FP&A, credit and risk. The best choice is the one where you can build clear depth in two years.
Can MBA Finance graduates get government jobs?
Yes, mainly through the RBI, SEBI and NABARD officer examinations, the IBPS PO and SBI PO exams, banks’ own notices for credit and finance specialists, and PSU management trainee notices. Check each notice’s degree and equivalence requirements.
Is finance operations a dead end?
Not at employers that move people into analytical roles. Ask how often that happens and how long it takes before accepting.
