Audit work in India falls into a few distinct streams. Statutory audit, carried out by CA firms under the Companies Act and the ICAI Standards on Auditing, gives an opinion on financial statements. Internal audit, done in-house or outsourced, reviews processes, controls and fraud risk across functions. Tax audits, bank branch and concurrent audits, IT audits and SOX or internal financial controls testing add further specialisms. Big 4 firms and their delivery centres also support audits of overseas entities, which brings in US GAAP, IFRS and international or PCAOB auditing standards.
In audit firms the usual path is article assistant, audit associate, senior, assistant manager, manager, director and partner, while industry roles move from internal auditor to audit manager and head of internal audit. A CA is essential for statutory audit, since only practising chartered accountants can sign those reports; ACCA and CPA holders are welcomed in global audit delivery, and CISA helps in IT audit. Employers value data-analytics tools, sampling judgement and clear working papers. When comparing audit jobs, ask which industries the team covers and how busy seasons are staffed.
