GST roles cover the full indirect tax cycle of a business: periodic and annual returns, reconciliation of input tax credit with supplier data, e-invoicing and e-way bill processes, and the tax configuration inside the ERP. Advisory work deals with classification, valuation, place of supply and the treatment of new transactions, while litigation support handles departmental audits, show cause notices, replies, refunds and appeals. Many indirect tax teams also look after customs duty and export incentive schemes, so these positions can extend well beyond GST itself.
Entry roles are usually titled GST executive or indirect tax analyst, progressing to consultant, assistant manager, indirect tax manager and head of indirect tax. CA and CA Inter candidates are common, and CMA, B.Com and M.Com holders with practical return-filing experience are often considered for compliance work; a law background helps on the litigation side. Strong Excel reconciliation, familiarity with the GST portal and SAP or Oracle tax modules are frequently requested. For GST jobs, mention how many registrations and states you have handled, since multi-state experience carries weight.
