CA Fresher Salary in India 2026: What Newly Qualified Chartered Accountants Actually Earn

Within a week of the CA Final result, every new batch asks the same question: what is a fair salary for a CA fresher? The honest answer is that there is no single number. A newly qualified Chartered Accountant joining a Big 4 audit team in Kolkata, a product control desk at a global bank in Mumbai and a plant finance role in Pune are all “CA freshers”, and their offers can differ by a factor of two. This guide sets out the bands that employers actually pay in 2026, what changes them, what sits inside a CTC figure, and how pay moves in the first five years, so you can judge an offer rather than guess.

What ICAI campus placement data tells you, and what it does not

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India runs campus placement twice a year through its Committee for Members in Industry and Business, and publishes statistics after each round on the CMI&B portal. In recent rounds the average package offered has generally sat around the ₹12 lakh mark, with the highest domestic offers well above ₹25 lakh and a long tail of offers below ₹8 lakh. The current figures are worth checking on the portal before you set expectations, because they move with each round.

Two cautions. First, the campus average is pulled up by a small number of large offers from banks, consulting firms and a few corporates; the median candidate receives less than the average. Second, campus placement covers only part of the market. Thousands of CAs find their first job through direct applications, referrals and articleship conversion, often with mid-sized firms and companies that never visit campus, and those packages are usually lower than the campus headline. Treat the campus figure as the top of the market for a fresher, not the norm.

Salary bands by type of employer

The single biggest driver of a fresher CA’s pay is the kind of employer, more than the city or the attempt. The bands below are broad guides for a newly qualified CA with no post-qualification experience, taken from current offers and placement patterns. Individual offers above and below these ranges exist.

Employer typeTypical fresher CTC (per year)What moves it within the band
Big 4 audit and tax (Big 4 jobs)₹7 lakh – ₹10 lakhService line, city, first-attempt premium, campus versus direct hire
Big 4 advisory, deals and risk consulting₹8 lakh – ₹12 lakhDeal exposure during articleship, academic record
Mid-sized and boutique CA firms₹4 lakh – ₹7 lakhFirm size, city, whether you convert from articleship
Indian corporates and listed companies₹8 lakh – ₹12 lakhManagement trainee programmes, sector, head office versus plant
Global capability centres of banks and multinationals (financial reporting, product control, fund accounting)₹9 lakh – ₹14 lakhBank versus non-bank, shift allowances, process
Investment banks, markets and front-office finance (banking jobs)₹12 lakh – ₹20 lakh and aboveRank, attempt, interview performance; very competitive
Public sector undertakings and government bodies₹10 lakh – ₹15 lakh including allowancesGrade structure, benefits such as provident fund, housing and medical that do not show in cash
Funded start-ups and product companies₹8 lakh – ₹15 lakh plus stock optionsStage of the company, role scope; stock options are not cash

A few patterns stand out. Audit practice pays the least among large employers but offers the widest exit options later, which is why many CAs accept it. Capability centres of global banks pay more than most people expect and hire freshers in numbers, especially in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Gurugram. Investment banking and markets roles pay the most but take a very small share of each batch. For a sense of what each track involves day to day, read our guide to practice versus a corporate job after qualification.

How the city changes the number

City matters less than employer type, but it is not nothing. Mumbai and Gurugram sit at the top for fresher CA packages because financial services, listed-company head offices and multinational corporate offices are concentrated there; Bengaluru and Hyderabad are close behind for capability-centre and technology roles; Pune and Chennai sit a little lower for comparable roles; Kolkata, Ahmedabad and smaller cities lower still, except for public sector and large-group head-office positions. The city pages explain each market: CA fresher jobs in Mumbai, CA fresher jobs in Bangalore and CA fresher jobs in Delhi NCR, with the wider markets on Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.

The number that should matter to you is take-home pay after rent and travel, not the headline. A ₹10 lakh offer in Mumbai with rent near Bandra Kurla Complex can leave you with less each month than ₹8.5 lakh in Pune or Hyderabad. Work this out before you compare offers across cities.

What is actually inside a CTC

Employers quote cost to company, and the same CTC can mean very different monthly money. Ask for the salary break-up and look for these items:

  • Fixed pay: basic, house rent allowance and other allowances paid every month. This is the number that pays your rent.
  • Variable pay: a bonus linked to your rating and the firm’s performance, usually paid annually. At many professional firms the variable component for freshers is modest; at banks it can be a large share of the package. Assume you will receive a portion, not all of it.
  • Joining or retention bonus: a one-time amount, often with a clawback if you leave within a year or two. Useful, but not recurring income.
  • Employer provident fund and gratuity: real money, but not in your account this year. Some employers include both in CTC; others show only PF.
  • Insurance, meals, transport and shift allowances: common in capability centres and operations roles. Shift allowances can add meaningfully to monthly pay for evening and night shifts.
  • Stock options: shown by start-ups and some multinationals. Value them at zero for cash-flow purposes and treat them as upside.

Also ask about exam leave and study support if you plan to add a CFA, CPA or other qualification, and about the notice period, which affects your ability to move later.

Does the attempt matter?

At the fresher stage, yes, for some employers. The Big 4, several banks and consulting firms shortlist first-attempt and rank-holding candidates more readily during campus rounds, and a few pay a visible premium for them. Rank holders also attract the highest campus offers. Beyond the first job, the attempt fades quickly: by the second or third year, employers look at what you have done, not when you qualified. If you took more than one attempt, apply widely and directly rather than relying only on campus, and let your articleship work carry the CV.

Articleship is the lever most freshers underuse

Two freshers with identical results can receive very different offers because of what they did during articleship. Statutory audit of listed clients, Ind AS conversion work, transfer pricing documentation, GST litigation support, internal audit of a bank, or a stint in a company’s finance team during industrial training all map directly to the roles employers are filling, and interviewers probe this work in detail. Describe it concretely on your CV: the industries of your clients, the audit areas or filings you owned, the standards you applied and the software you used. A generic “assisted in statutory audit” line is where offers drift to the bottom of the band.

How pay grows in the first five years

Starting pay is less important than the slope. As a broad pattern across employer types:

  • Years one and two: annual increments of roughly 8 to 15 percent, plus a promotion step at many firms around the two-year mark.
  • Years two to four: the first job switch, which typically produces a jump of 25 to 50 percent when a CA moves from audit into industry, from a mid-sized firm to a large employer, or into a capability centre with a clear process ownership role.
  • Years four to six: manager-level roles in professional firms and assistant manager to manager roles in industry, where packages commonly sit between ₹15 lakh and ₹30 lakh depending on employer and city, and controllership or financial planning roles in large companies move above that.

The CAs who grow fastest usually chose a first job with real learning and ownership rather than the highest first-year package, then switched once with a clear story about what they can run independently.

Negotiating a first offer

Campus offers at large employers are standardised by level and rarely negotiable on fixed pay for freshers; what you can sometimes influence is the city, the service line or team, the joining date and occasionally a joining bonus. Direct offers from mid-sized firms and companies have more room, especially if you hold another offer. Negotiate on facts: a competing written offer, a specific skill the role needs that you already have, or market data from the ICAI placement figures. Avoid negotiating against a number you cannot evidence, and never let a few thousand rupees a month decide between a role with strong learning and one without.

Comparing two offers properly

Put both offers in a simple sheet: fixed monthly pay, expected variable at a realistic percentage, one-time bonuses, employer PF, allowances, and an estimate of rent and commute in that city. Then add the things that do not have a rupee value yet but will: the reputation of the team, the breadth of work, exposure to clients or senior management, the exam-leave policy and the exit options after two years. Most experienced CAs will tell you that the second list decided their career more than the first.

Where to see current openings

Current fresher roles across employers are collected on CA fresher jobs, with employer-specific pages such as EY, Deloitte, KPMG, PwC, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Accenture. Each listing shows the location and experience asked for and links to the employer’s official application page. For the full picture of the market, see all CA jobs in India, and for how to plan the search itself, read First job after CA: a practical plan. For interviews, our audit interview preparation guide covers the technical rounds that most fresher CAs face first.
