CA Industrial Training: Eligibility, Duration, Stipend and Practical Checklist

A practical guide for CA students considering industrial training, covering current ICAI eligibility, duration, advance intimation, employer criteria, stipend, forms and a decision checklist.

CA Industrial Training: Eligibility, Duration, Stipend and Practical Checklist

CA industrial training gives an articled assistant an opportunity to complete an eligible part of practical training in an industry environment rather than spending the entire training period in a CA firm. It can be useful for students who want exposure to corporate finance, controllership, internal audit, taxation, treasury, financial reporting or other in-house finance functions. But industrial training is not simply a job switch: eligibility, employer approval, duration, intimation and documentation must comply with ICAI requirements.

The current requirements below are based on ICAI's Revised Eligibility Criteria for Empanelment of Organizations to Impart Industrial Training, effective from 1 January 2026.

Who is eligible for CA industrial training?

Under ICAI's current announcement, an articled assistant must have passed the Intermediate examination or the equivalent examinations specified by ICAI and must have completed at least 12 months of practical training before becoming eligible for industrial training.

This means a student should not evaluate an industrial-training offer only on the job description or stipend. The first check is whether the student's own training record satisfies the eligibility condition on the proposed commencement date.

How long can industrial training last?

ICAI states that industrial training is to be for a period ranging from 9 months to 12 months. The training is undergone under a member of ICAI, and the articled assistant must intimate the Principal at least three months in advance of the proposed commencement date.

That advance-intimation requirement is important for planning. A student who waits until receiving an offer before considering the procedural timeline may discover that the intended joining date does not fit the regulatory process. It is therefore sensible to work backwards from the desired joining date and discuss the transition early.

Which organizations can impart industrial training?

Not every company automatically qualifies. Under the criteria effective from 1 January 2026, a financial, commercial or industrial undertaking can be eligible for empanelment if it satisfies at least one of the specified financial criteria: fixed assets of at least Rs. 10 crore; total turnover of at least Rs. 50 crore; or paid-up share capital of at least Rs. 1 crore together with net worth of at least Rs. 5 crore.

In addition, ICAI requires a minimum of two full-time working Chartered Accountants, each of whom has been an ICAI member continuously for at least three years. ICAI's announcement also states that empanelment is valid for five years, after which renewal is mandatory subject to the eligibility criteria prevailing at renewal.

For a student, the practical lesson is simple: do not assume that a large or well-known employer is currently eligible. Confirm the organization's industrial-training status and the member under whom the training will be registered before making an irreversible career decision.

Who can train an industrial trainee?

ICAI's current criteria distinguish between Associate and Fellow members. An Associate who has been a member continuously for at least three years may train one industrial trainee at a time. A Fellow may train two industrial trainees at a time.

This is another reason to verify the specific training arrangement rather than relying only on a company's recruitment advertisement. An employer may have finance vacancies, but the proposed industrial-training seat must fit ICAI's framework.

What stipend applies?

ICAI states that industrial trainees are to receive a monthly stipend as mutually agreed, subject to a minimum of Rs. 15,000 per month. A company may offer more, but the commercial offer should not distract from checking training eligibility, registration and the quality of practical exposure.

What forms and documentation are involved?

ICAI's 2026 announcement states that an Agreement of Training is to be entered into in Form 104. On satisfactory completion, the member imparting the training is to issue a Completion Certificate in Form 105 and forward a copy to the Secretary. ICAI further states that the industrial-training period is treated as service under articles for purposes of the Regulations, provided the prescribed completion certificate is submitted.

Students should keep copies of the agreement, ICAI acknowledgements, correspondence relating to the transition, attendance or leave records where applicable, stipend records and the completion documentation. Good record-keeping becomes especially important if there is later a discrepancy in the training period.

Practical example

Suppose a CA student has passed Intermediate and will complete 12 months of practical training on 30 September. The student receives an industrial-training opportunity with a qualifying organization and hopes to start on 1 October. Eligibility after 12 months alone does not mean the student should simply resign and join on that date. The three-month advance intimation requirement, the organization's empanelment status, the eligibility of the supervising ICAI member and the prescribed training agreement all need to be considered before fixing the transition date.

The correct approach is therefore to plan the move as a regulated training transition, not as an ordinary employment switch.

Industrial training decision checklist

  • Have you passed the relevant Intermediate examination?
  • Will you have completed at least 12 months of practical training before industrial training starts?
  • Have you factored in the three-month advance intimation to your Principal?
  • Is the organization currently eligible and appropriately empanelled with ICAI?
  • Is an eligible ICAI member available to supervise the industrial training?
  • Does the proposed duration fall within the current 9-to-12-month range?
  • Does the stipend meet at least the ICAI-prescribed minimum?
  • Will Form 104 and other required registration steps be completed correctly?
  • Have you checked how leave and the proposed end date affect completion of practical training?
  • Does the role provide meaningful exposure aligned with your career objective?

How to judge whether industrial training is right for you

Regulatory eligibility answers whether you can take industrial training; career fit answers whether you should. Compare the proposed role with the exposure you would otherwise receive in your CA firm. A corporate role may provide deeper experience in one business and stronger understanding of systems, reporting cycles and commercial decision-making. A CA firm may provide broader client exposure across industries and assignments.

Before accepting, ask what work you will actually perform, who will supervise you, whether the role is concentrated in repetitive processing or includes analytical responsibility, and whether the experience supports your intended post-qualification path.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming any corporate internship qualifies as ICAI industrial training.
  • Planning the joining date without accounting for the three-month intimation requirement.
  • Checking the employer's brand but not its current empanelment and supervising-member position.
  • Choosing solely on stipend without assessing the actual work profile.
  • Failing to preserve registration and completion records.
  • Relying on old online discussions when ICAI has revised the applicable criteria.

Practical takeaway

CA industrial training can be a valuable bridge from articleship into corporate finance, but it should be planned around both career quality and ICAI compliance. Confirm your eligibility, the organization's current empanelment, the supervising member, the 9-to-12-month duration, three-month advance intimation, stipend and prescribed forms before committing to a joining date. For the latest operative requirements, use the official ICAI industrial-training announcement rather than relying on older summaries.
