Accounting roles revolve around keeping the books accurate and closing them on time. In practice that means journal entries, ledger scrutiny, bank and intercompany reconciliations, fixed-asset registers, accruals and provisions, and the month-end and year-end close behind the financial statements. Indian companies report under Ind AS or, if smaller, the earlier Accounting Standards, while teams serving overseas parents or clients work in US GAAP or IFRS. Shared-service centres often split the cycle into record-to-report, procure-to-pay and order-to-cash towers, each with its own controls.
A common ladder runs from accounts executive or associate to senior accountant, team lead, assistant manager, accounting manager and financial controller. B.Com, M.Com and CA Inter candidates frequently start in transactional work; CA, CMA and ACCA holders often move faster into reporting and controllership, and CPA is valued where US GAAP is involved. Employers look for hands-on SAP FICO, Oracle or Tally experience along with strong Excel and reconciliation skills.
