Audit work in India falls into a few distinct streams. Statutory audit, carried out by CA firms under the Companies Act and the ICAI Standards on Auditing, gives an opinion on financial statements. In audit firms the usual path is article assistant, audit associate, senior, assistant manager, manager, director and partner, while industry roles move from internal auditor to audit manager and head of internal audit. A CA is essential for statutory audit, since only practising chartered accountants can sign those reports; ACCA and CPA holders are welcomed in global audit delivery, and CISA helps in IT audit.
