The Financial Risk Manager certification from the Global Association of Risk Professionals has become the common language of risk hiring in India, and the reason is where the work sits. Global banks run market risk, credit risk, counterparty risk, model validation and risk reporting for their worldwide trading and lending books out of Mumbai, Bengaluru, Gurugram and Hyderabad, and those teams need people who already know value at risk, expected shortfall, stress testing, the Basel capital and liquidity framework and how a derivative is valued. Reading that on a CV is faster than inferring it, so FRM appears in qualification lines next to CA, CFA and MBA Finance far more often than its holder numbers in India would suggest.
The roles split into a few recognisable families. Market risk teams measure and explain daily risk on trading desks and run the stress and backtesting programme. Credit risk covers both wholesale credit analysis and the modelling side — probability of default, loss given default, IFRS 9 and expected credit loss. Model risk and validation teams independently re-test the bank’s own models, work that suits candidates with a quantitative degree alongside the certification. Liquidity and treasury risk work on the liquidity coverage ratio, funding plans and interest-rate risk in the banking book. Outside banks, rating agencies, NBFCs, insurers and the risk advisory practices of consulting firms hire for similar skills, and fintech lenders have added credit-policy and portfolio-risk roles of their own.
A practical note on reading these listings. Many say “FRM preferred” rather than required, which means a strong candidate without it is still considered — and equally that your certification is a tiebreaker, not a substitute for hands-on work. State your part clearly: Part I cleared, Part II cleared, or certified after the two years of qualifying experience GARP requires. Employers also look hard at tools, so name what you have actually used — SQL, Python or R, Excel modelling, Bloomberg, Murex, Calypso, SAS — and the portfolio or product you covered. Each listing below shows the city, experience asked for and, where the employer states it, the work mode and last date, and every application is completed on the employer’s own site.
Both, and the wording tells you which. “FRM certified” or “FRM mandatory” appears mainly in market risk, model validation and senior risk roles at global banks. “FRM preferred”, “FRM/CFA a plus” or “FRM Part II cleared” is far more common and means the real requirement is your experience, with the certification as a tiebreaker. Apply in both cases, but lead your CV with the risk work you have done rather than the certification. Related openings sit on the risk jobs and banking jobs pages.
Yes, for analyst and associate roles. Write it plainly as “FRM Part I cleared (Part II scheduled)” near the top of your CV, because recruiters screen on that line. Certification itself needs both parts plus two years of relevant professional experience, which GARP verifies, so many people work in risk while completing it. What you should not do is write “FRM” alone when you have cleared one part; interviewers check, and it costs you credibility early.
Market risk teams produce and explain daily risk numbers for trading desks — value at risk, sensitivities, limit usage and breaches — and run stress testing and backtesting. Credit risk splits into wholesale analysis of borrowers and the modelling side: probability of default, loss given default, exposure at default and expected credit loss under IFRS 9. Model risk and validation teams independently re-test the bank’s own models, documenting assumptions, data quality and performance. Liquidity and treasury risk work on the liquidity coverage ratio, funding plans and interest-rate risk in the banking book; see treasury jobs.
Data skills and product knowledge, in that order. SQL is close to mandatory, and Python or R is expected in modelling and validation teams; say what you built with them rather than listing them. Then be specific about products: which asset classes, which instruments, which book. Name the systems you used — Bloomberg, Murex, Calypso, SAS, a bank’s internal risk engine. Finally, be able to explain one number end to end, for example why a value-at-risk figure moved yesterday, because that question comes up in almost every interview.
It is, if risk is where you want to end up. A Chartered Accountant already competes well for credit, controls and reporting roles; the certification helps most when you want to move into market risk, model validation or quantitative credit risk, where interviewers want evidence that you know the measurement framework and not just the accounting. If your target is internal audit or financial control, the CIA or your existing CA carries more weight. Many risk listings accept all three, which is why they also appear on CA jobs.
Mumbai for banks, NBFCs, insurers and rating agencies; Bengaluru, Gurugram, Hyderabad and Pune for the India risk centres of global banks, which hold the largest share of market risk, credit modelling and validation work.
