Fund accountants keep the books of investment funds and calculate the net asset value (NAV) that investors rely on. Daily or monthly tasks include pricing securities, booking trades, income and expense accruals, corporate actions, fee calculations, and reconciling cash and positions with custodians and brokers. Private equity and private credit funds add capital calls, distributions and waterfall calculations, while investor services teams handle subscriptions, redemptions and investor reporting. Most roles are with global custodian banks, investment banks’ fund services units, asset managers and fund administrators, largely in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad and Gurugram.

B.Com and M.Com graduates usually join as fund accountants or analysts; CA and CFA candidates and MBA Finance graduates often enter at associate level or move into review roles. Progression runs through senior fund accountant and associate to team lead, AVP or manager. Employers value a clear understanding of financial instruments, accrual accounting, Excel and attention to detail, since a small error flows straight into the NAV. Many teams work hours aligned to US, UK or European markets. Before interviews, practise building a simple NAV from a trial balance, including management fee accruals.
