Risk management roles fall into two broad families. Banks, insurers, payment companies and asset managers employ both kinds, consulting firms advise clients on frameworks, and global capability centres run testing and reporting for overseas entities.

Titles generally move from risk analyst to senior analyst, risk manager, AVP or VP in banks, and head of risk. Quantitative paths favour FRM, CFA, statistics or engineering backgrounds with Python, SQL or SAS skills, while controls-focused paths suit CA, CPA, ACCA and CIA holders who understand processes and accounting. Clear writing of control descriptions and issue reports matters in both. A practical point for risk jobs is to decide early whether you want a modelling career or a controls career, because the two diverge quickly.
