Each time a batch of Cost and Management Accountants qualifies, the institute that examined them invites employers to recruit from it. That programme, ICMAI campus placement, brings public sector undertakings, manufacturing groups, FMCG companies, banks and consulting firms to the institute’s campus centres. According to the institute’s April 2025 notice, its drives in 2022, 2023 and 2024 produced more than 3,000 placements, averaging ₹12 lakh a year in CTC, with a highest offer of ₹36 lakh. For a well-prepared candidate, an offer can come within weeks of the result.
What it is and who runs it
The Institute of Cost Accountants of India runs a campus placement programme for members who have newly qualified in a given examination term. The institute coordinates with recruiters, publishes the schedule and the list of participating organisations, maintains the candidate database and hosts the interview events at its campus centres. It does not set salaries, guarantee jobs or decide who is selected; each company runs its own selection. Schedules, eligibility notes and company lists are published on icmai.in, and they change with every term, so treat the official notices as the final word.
Who can take part
Eligibility works at two levels. The institute decides which qualified candidates can register for a particular round, typically those who have just passed CMA Final in the term the round covers. Each company then sets its own criteria, which can include age, number of attempts, marks in graduation or in the CMA exams, preferred locations and specific skills. These appear in the job details each company publishes for the round. Read them carefully; applying to roles you are not eligible for wastes a shortlist slot.
How the process runs
- Register on time. The registration window opens after the result. Register early and complete every field of your profile; incomplete profiles are easy to filter out.
- Complete any training the notice asks for. When the notice for your round includes an orientation or skill-training programme for registered candidates, complete it before the drive.
- Study the company list. Download each company’s job details, note the role, location, package and criteria, and decide which ones you want.
- Shortlisting. Companies shortlist from the candidate database. Only shortlisted candidates are called for that company’s process.
- Selection. Expect some combination of a written or online test, a group discussion, a technical interview and an HR interview. Results can be announced the same day or a few weeks later.
What packages look like
The institute’s own figures, quoted above, are the best guide to the overall level. Records for individual campuses show the spread behind them. At the Mumbai campus in November 2022, for example, 101 candidates were selected, the average package was ₹11 lakh and the highest, ₹18 lakh, came from GAIL (India) Limited.
Read these numbers with care. A small number of high offers lift the average; CTC includes provident fund, gratuity and allowances, so monthly pay is lower; and the figures cover placed candidates only. The CMA salary guide converts typical CTCs into monthly take-home pay.
Who recruits
ICMAI’s own placement profile describes its recruiters by sector rather than by name: public sector undertakings, banking and financial services, IT and IT-enabled services, healthcare and pharmaceutical companies, and the Big Four and other consultancy firms. The participating organisations change every round. They are usually drawn from public sector undertakings in oil and gas, power and infrastructure; manufacturing and engineering groups; FMCG and consumer companies; banks; telecom and technology companies; and consulting, audit and tax firms. For each round ICMAI publishes a schedule naming the companies, the roles, the locations and often the CTC, and each company’s job details state its own eligibility rules. Work from that schedule rather than from lists of past recruiters, because a company that came last year may not come this time.
How to prepare
Written test
Revise cost and management accounting (marginal costing, standard costing and variances, budgeting), financial management (ratios, working capital, capital budgeting), financial accounting and Ind AS basics, and GST. Many tests add quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning; practise timed questions, because speed matters more than depth.
Group discussion
Topics are often business or economic: GST collections, manufacturing incentives, the effect of automation on finance jobs. Enter the discussion early, bring one concrete fact or example, and summarise others fairly. Shouting over people loses marks.
Technical interview
Expect questions on your practical training: the costing or cost audit work you did, the systems you used, a variance you explained. Public sector panels often ask about project costing, capital budgeting and internal control. Corporate panels test how you would handle month-end or a budget. Prepare two or three stories with numbers.
HR interview
Be clear about location flexibility, bonds and joining dates. Know the company: its products, where its plants are, and what the role involves day to day.
A four-week preparation plan
Most candidates have a few weeks between the result and the drive. A simple plan:
- Week 1: Register, complete your profile, and list the companies you want with their criteria and roles. Revise costing: marginal costing, standard costing and variances, budgeting.
- Week 2: Financial management and accounting: ratios, working capital, capital budgeting, Ind AS basics. Do one timed aptitude set every day.
- Week 3: GST and direct tax basics, and a mock group discussion with friends on two or three current business topics. Write your practical-training stories down with numbers.
- Week 4: Research each shortlisted company: products, plants, recent results. Do mock interviews, especially the opening “tell us about yourself” and “why this company”.
Technical questions to expect
- Explain the difference between marginal and absorption costing, and when each gives a different profit.
- Material price variance is adverse but usage variance is favourable. What might have happened?
- How would you allocate common overheads between two products, and what can go wrong?
- Walk us through a capital budgeting decision using NPV. Why might IRR mislead?
- What are cost records, and which companies must maintain them?
- How does input tax credit work under GST, and what blocks it?
- Tell us about a costing or audit task from your practical training and what you found.
Answer with a short structure: the concept, a simple example with numbers, and what it means for a decision. Panels remember candidates who connect the technical answer to a business choice.
Documents to keep ready
- Your CMA Final mark sheet or result printout, and graduation and school records, with clear file names.
- A one-page summary of your practical training: organisation, period, and the work you did, with numbers where possible.
- A two-page CV tailored to finance roles, with your registration and membership status at the top.
- Identity proof and photographs as specified in the notice.
After an offer: what happens next
Most employers follow the offer with document verification and a background check, then a joining date that may be several weeks away. Public sector offers can include a medical examination and a service agreement. Read the bond terms, if any, before you sign: the period, the amount, and what happens if you leave early. If you are waiting on a better option, ask about the joining date politely rather than accepting and later withdrawing; recruiters on campus talk to each other, and the institute’s relationship with employers depends on candidates honouring commitments.
Choosing between offers
If you receive more than one offer, compare the role before the package. A management trainee programme with structured rotation and a two-year bond may build more than a slightly higher salary in a narrow role. Check the location you will be posted to, any service bond and its amount, the fixed and variable split, and the next promotion step. Our guide to jobs after CMA explains how each path develops.
Questions candidates ask
Who is eligible for ICMAI campus placement?
Members who have newly qualified in the examination term the round covers, subject to the institute’s registration rules, and then to each company’s own criteria on marks, attempts, age and location.
When are campus drives held?
Programmes are announced after the results of each examination term, so there are usually two cycles a year. Dates, centres and the company list are published on icmai.in; register as soon as the window opens.
What is the average package in ICMAI campus placement?
ICMAI reports an average CTC of ₹12 lakh and a highest of ₹36 lakh across its 2022 to 2024 drives. Individual companies offer well above and below that average.
What if I am not shortlisted by any company?
Many CMAs are hired off campus. Analyst roles at capability centres and openings at manufacturers and consulting firms are listed throughout the year.
If campus does not work out
A large share of CMA hiring happens off campus, at capability centres, finance operations firms, consulting firms and manufacturers that post openings on their own career sites. The CMA jobs and fresher jobs pages collect current openings, and our list of companies hiring CMAs shows which employers are most active. Early applications tend to be reviewed first, so do not wait a week after a listing appears.
