Ask a few people what a newly qualified CMA earns and you will hear figures from coaching brochures, campus posters and friends’ offers, often years apart. For CMA salary in India, the most reliable figure comes from the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) itself: its placement notice of April 2025 reports an average CTC of ₹12 lakh a year and a highest CTC of ₹36 lakh across its campus drives in 2022, 2023 and 2024, with more than 3,000 placements over those three years. That is a useful anchor, but it describes one route into work. A newly qualified Cost and Management Accountant who joins a capability centre, a manufacturing plant or a practising firm off campus will usually start on different numbers.
What ICMAI’s campus figures include, and what they leave out
Campus figures cover qualified members who registered for the institute’s placement programme and received an offer. They do not include members who found jobs on their own, joined family businesses or went into practice. Records for individual campuses show a wide spread around the overall average; our ICMAI campus placement guide walks through one of them and explains how the drives run. Public sector undertakings and large corporates tend to sit at the upper end of campus offers; services and consulting firms recruiting in larger numbers tend to sit lower. Which employers are recruiting CMAs now, and for what roles, is counted in our roundup of companies hiring CMAs.
A CTC is also not a salary. It includes the employer’s provident fund contribution, gratuity and any variable bonus, none of which arrives in your account each month.
Starting pay by route
The ranges below are indicative starting CTCs for newly qualified CMAs. The campus row draws on ICMAI’s published figures; the others reflect current market practice for these roles, which employers rarely publish in their listings. Treat them as a guide to where each route sits, not as an offer you should expect.
| Route into the first job | Typical first role | Indicative starting CTC |
|---|---|---|
| ICMAI campus placement | Finance executive, management trainee, costing executive | Average about ₹12 lakh (ICMAI, 2022–24); individual offers range well below and above |
| Capability centres and finance operations firms | FP&A, business finance or controller analyst | About ₹5–9 lakh |
| Consulting firms (finance transformation, SAP) | Analyst or associate consultant | About ₹6–10 lakh |
| Manufacturing companies, off campus | Plant accountant, costing executive | About ₹4–8 lakh |
| Cost audit and practising firms | Associate, audit assistant | About ₹3–6 lakh |
Monthly in-hand pay: two worked examples
Search engines are full of questions about CMA salary per month, so here is how a CTC turns into take-home pay. The examples assume basic pay at 50 percent of fixed pay (under the labour codes in force since November 2025, allowances above half of total remuneration are added back to wages for PF and gratuity, so many employers now set basic at about half), provident fund at 12 percent of basic on both sides, gratuity at 4.81 percent of basic, professional tax of about ₹200 a month where the state levies it, no variable pay, and the new income-tax regime with its standard deduction and rebate as they stand at the time of writing. Your employer’s structure will differ, so ask HR for a sample monthly breakup before you accept.
- ₹6 lakh CTC: gross annual salary about ₹5.54 lakh, of which basic is about ₹2.77 lakh; employer PF (about ₹33,000) and gratuity (about ₹13,000) make up the rest of the CTC. After employee PF and professional tax, with no income tax due at this level, monthly take-home is roughly ₹43,000.
- ₹12 lakh CTC: gross annual salary about ₹11.07 lakh, of which basic is about ₹5.53 lakh; employer PF (about ₹66,000) and gratuity (about ₹27,000) make up the rest. Taxable salary after the standard deduction is about ₹10.3 lakh, within the new-regime rebate limit, so after employee PF and professional tax monthly take-home is roughly ₹86,500.
Two things change these numbers quickly: a variable bonus, which you should treat as uncertain until it is paid, and PF calculated on the statutory wage ceiling of ₹15,000 instead of full basic, which some employers allow and which raises monthly take-home.
Public sector pay
PSUs that recruit CMAs as finance executives or management trainees usually pay on the industrial dearness allowance (IDA) scales, with a basic pay band for each grade plus dearness allowance, perquisites and benefits. Entry grades and the CTC figure are printed in each recruitment notice, and the total package is often competitive with the private sector once housing, medical cover and retirement benefits are counted. Read the notice for the grade, the basic pay range and any service bond before comparing it with a private offer.
Pay after three, six and ten years
Once you are working, the function you build expertise in matters far more than the letters after your name. CMAs in FP&A and business finance at good employers often reach roughly ₹10 to 18 lakh with three to five years of experience, and roughly ₹18 to 35 lakh as finance managers and senior managers after six to ten years. Plant controllers in large groups follow a slower early curve but become well paid and hard to replace. CMAs with SAP CO, product costing or planning-tool expertise often see the sharpest jumps, usually by moving between employers after two or three implementations. Finance heads of divisions and large plants earn more than these ranges.
People at the top of each band have usually done two things: changed employer at least once at a sensible moment, and taken responsibility for a business outcome rather than only a report.
City and employer effects
Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi NCR pay the highest headline salaries because banks, consulting firms and capability centres compete there. Pune and Hyderabad typically pay a little less for similar grades, and plants in industrial towns pay less on paper but often add shift, transport or housing benefits. Current openings are on the CMA pages for Bangalore, Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune.
CMA and CA pay compared
On campus the gap is narrower than many students assume, because recruiters at that stage hire both qualifications into the same finance roles; ICAI publishes its own campus placement results each term if you want to compare a particular year. The real difference is the size of the market. Chartered Accountants have statutory audit, which only they can sign, and the Big 4 assurance practices, so there are many more CA openings. In FP&A, business finance, costing, MIS and finance operations, employers usually list “CA/CMA” and pay for the role. The CA vs CMA comparison covers the courses themselves.
Raising your pay
Become strong in one system, usually SAP CO or FICO, and be able to describe the reports you built. Learn to model in Excel and present in a BI tool. Write variance commentary a non-finance manager can act on. Check what employers are asking for every couple of years on the CMA jobs page, and if you are still at the Intermediate stage, the CMA Inter jobs guide explains what those roles pay and lead to.
Salary questions CMAs ask
What is a CMA fresher’s salary per month?
It depends on the CTC and its structure. On the assumptions above, a ₹6 lakh CTC gives roughly ₹43,000 a month in hand and a ₹12 lakh CTC roughly ₹86,500. Off-campus fresher roles at capability centres and manufacturers more often sit between these two figures than above them.
Is the CMA salary lower than a CA’s?
Not in most finance roles, where employers list “CA/CMA” and pay for the role and grade. Over a career, pay follows the function and employer more than the qualification; CAs have more openings because of statutory audit, while CMAs do particularly well in costing, FP&A and plant finance.
Do CMA Intermediate candidates get paid jobs?
Yes, mainly in accounting operations and accounts executive roles, typically around ₹3 to 6 lakh a year. See the CMA Inter jobs guide.
What is the highest CMA salary in India?
ICMAI’s highest reported campus CTC for 2022–2024 was ₹36 lakh. Experienced CMAs in senior finance roles earn well above that; there is no single ceiling.
Last reviewed on 24 October 2026. Campus figures are from ICMAI’s published notices linked above; other ranges are indicative and based on current market practice for the roles described.
