CMA Inter Jobs: Roles, Pay, Practical Training and How to Get Shortlisted

Students who clear the Intermediate groups often assume employers will ignore them until they qualify. They don’t, but CMA Inter jobs are concentrated in a few kinds of employer and rarely carry the words “CMA Inter” in the title. Many students start looking at this stage to fund the rest of the course, to gain experience before Final, or because practical training and a job can run together.

Is CMA Intermediate enough to get a job?

For operational and junior analyst roles, yes. For senior FP&A, controller and consulting roles, generally no. Employers hiring at Intermediate level look for accounting fundamentals, comfort with an ERP and the discipline to deliver a month-end on time. They are not paying for the full qualification, so pay reflects that, but the experience counts heavily once you qualify.

Where the jobs are

  • Shared-services and finance operations centres. The largest employer group. Teams in record to report, accounts payable, order to cash and MIS hire Intermediate candidates in Gurugram, Noida, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and Jaipur.
  • Practising cost accountant and CA firms. Audit assistants for cost audit, internal audit, GST and certification work. This often doubles as practical training.
  • Small and mid-sized companies. Accounts executive roles covering books, GST returns, TDS and MIS. The title is modest but the range of work is wide.
  • Manufacturing plants. Junior costing and stores accounting roles, usually with a view to promotion after qualification.

How to read the qualification line

Employers rarely write “CMA Inter”. Look instead for lines like these, which appear in real listings:

  • “Bachelor of Commerce, CA Inter, CMA” with one to three or four to six years of experience: common in record-to-report operations roles. Recruiters for these roles usually accept Intermediate-level CMA candidates with relevant experience, but confirm before you invest in the application.
  • “CA/CMA/MBA preferred”: the qualification is listed as a preference and does not screen you out. A B.Com graduate with CMA Intermediate and strong Excel can be shortlisted.
  • “Qualified CMA” or “ACMA”: the employer wants membership. Do not apply until you qualify.

Listings on the CA Inter jobs page often accept CMA Intermediate as well, because the work is the same. Read the qualification line in each one.

Practical training and work

Under ICMAI’s New Practical Training Scheme 2020, students who registered for Intermediate on or after 11 February 2020 must complete 15 months of practical training before the CMA Final result can be declared, and the training period counts towards the three years of experience needed for membership. To sit for Final, at least 10 months must be completed and certified by the cut-off date: 31 August for the December exam and the end of February for the June exam, according to the institute’s training FAQ. Training can be done with a practising cost accountant or a firm of cost accountants, or with a recognised organisation such as a company, bank, PSU or government body. Students who already work in a recognised organisation can apply for exemption by submitting Form T-3 online. Deadlines, fees and the list of eligible organisations are set by ICMAI and change from time to time, so check the current scheme on icmai.in before accepting a job on the assumption that it will count.

What these roles pay

Indicative pay for Intermediate-level candidates is around ₹3 to 6 lakh a year, higher in the metros and at larger operations centres, lower in smaller companies. Shift allowances and transport can add meaningfully for teams working UK or US hours. The bigger financial gain comes later: candidates with two years of solid month-end or MIS experience usually start at a higher band once they qualify than those with none. Our CMA salary guide covers pay after qualification.

What interviewers test

  • Journal entries. Accruals, prepayments, depreciation, provisions and simple intercompany entries. Expect to write them out as well as explain them.
  • Reconciliations. How you would reconcile a bank account, a vendor statement or a GST return with the books, and what you do with the differences.
  • Excel. Lookups, pivot tables and basic formulas, often in a short practical test.
  • GST and TDS basics. Input tax credit matching, common TDS sections, and what a return reconciliation involves.
  • Exam plans. When your next attempt is and how much leave you will need. Answer honestly; employers plan around it.

A typical month in an operations role

Most Intermediate-level CMAs start in accounting operations, so it helps to know what the work looks like. The first working days of the month are the close: posting accruals and prepayments, clearing suspense items, running depreciation, and reconciling bank, vendor and intercompany balances against tight deadlines. The middle of the month is quieter: resolving open reconciliation items, answering queries from the business or auditors, and improving checklists. The last week prepares for the next close. Teams supporting clients abroad follow the client’s calendar and hours, which is why shift timing is the first thing to ask about.

The work is structured, and that is its value at this stage. You learn how a real general ledger behaves, how controls are documented, and how an error flows through reports. Those are exactly the things FP&A and controller interviewers probe once you qualify.

Two interview questions, answered well

“A vendor’s statement shows ₹1,20,000 outstanding, but our ledger shows ₹95,000. What do you do?” A strong answer sets out a method. First, match the two line by line for the period. Then look for the usual causes: an invoice the vendor has raised that we have not yet booked, perhaps because it is awaiting approval or a goods receipt; a payment we made that the vendor has not yet applied; a debit note we raised that the vendor has not accepted; or TDS deducted by us that the vendor shows gross. Each difference is listed with its reason and an owner, and only genuine errors are corrected through entries. Interviewers want to see that you would not simply post an adjustment to make the balances agree.

“Electricity for March is used in March, but the bill arrives in April. How do you account for it?” Book an accrual in March for the estimated amount, debiting the electricity expense and crediting accrued expenses, based on the meter reading or the previous months’ trend. When the bill arrives in April, reverse the accrual and book the actual invoice, so any difference falls into April. Mention that the estimate should be reasonable and documented, because auditors will ask how you arrived at it.

Common mistakes in applications

  • Hiding your status. Writing “CMA” without saying Intermediate misleads the recruiter and usually ends the process at verification. State it plainly.
  • Generic CVs. “Good knowledge of accounts” tells an employer nothing. “Prepared monthly bank and vendor reconciliations for three entities in SAP” does.
  • Applying everywhere. Roles asking for a qualified member or six years of experience are not for this stage. Focus on listings with one to three years and broad qualification lines.
  • Ignoring location. Operations centres expect regular office attendance. Apply in cities where you can work.

Before you sign: four things to ask

  • What are the shift timings, and do they change at month-end?
  • How much study leave is allowed before exams, and is it paid?
  • Will the work count towards practical training, and who will certify it?
  • What is the next role up from this one, and how long do people usually take to reach it?

Balancing a job with CMA Final

Operations roles have predictable peaks at month-end and quieter weeks in between, which makes them easier to combine with study than client-facing audit roles during busy season. Before accepting, ask about study leave, the shift pattern and overtime at close. Many candidates choose a day shift role with a slightly lower salary to protect study time, and that is usually the right call: clearing Final quickly is worth far more than a small difference in pay now.

Your CV at Intermediate level

Put your status clearly at the top: which groups you have cleared, and when you plan to attempt Final. List the ERP you have used and the processes you have handled, with numbers where possible: the entities you closed, the reconciliations you owned, the reports you built. If your practical training included costing or cost audit work, describe it specifically; it sets you apart from B.Com candidates applying for the same seat.

Questions students ask

What is the salary after CMA Inter per month?

Indicative CTCs of about ₹3 to 6 lakh a year usually mean roughly ₹21,000 to ₹43,000 a month in hand, depending on the city, the employer and how the salary is structured.

Can I complete practical training while working?

Often, yes, if your employer is a recognised organisation and the training is documented as ICMAI requires, or through the Form T-3 exemption route for employed students. Confirm with the institute before relying on it.

Which companies hire CMA Inter candidates?

Finance operations firms and shared-services centres are the largest employers, followed by practising firms, smaller companies and manufacturing plants. The employer data in our CMA hiring roundup names the firms posting most often.

After you qualify

From operations, the usual next step is FP&A, business finance or controllership, often through an internal move after 12 to 18 months. Plant roles lead to plant controller and costing manager positions. Our guide to jobs after CMA lays out the paths, and the CMA jobs in Delhi NCR page is a good place to start, because NCR’s operations centres hire more semi-qualified candidates than most cities. Chartered Accountancy students at the same stage face similar choices; our semi-qualified CA jobs guide is worth reading for comparison.
