“Semi-qualified CA” appears in thousands of Indian job postings, and it describes one of the largest groups of finance professionals in the country: people who have cleared CA Intermediate, usually completed or nearly completed articleship, and have not yet become members of ICAI. Some are preparing for the next CA Final attempt; some have paused; some have decided to build a career without the final qualification. This guide explains what employers mean by the term, which roles are realistically open, what they pay, how to combine a job with CA Final attempts, and what the paths look like if you stop.
What employers mean by semi-qualified
There is no official definition, so read each posting for its own version. Common variants:
- CA Inter or IPCC cleared: both groups passed, articleship completed or in progress.
- CA Final pending or CA Finalist: Intermediate cleared, articleship completed, one or more Final attempts remaining or planned.
- CA dropout: used, bluntly, for candidates who have stopped pursuing the qualification after Intermediate; the roles are the same as above.
- Single group: some mid-sized firms accept one group of Intermediate with articleship experience for audit assistant roles.
What all of these have in common from the employer’s side is useful: you have passed a demanding accounting, tax and audit examination and you have two to three years of practical work in a CA firm. That combination is why semi-qualified candidates are hired ahead of fresh commerce graduates for a large set of roles.
Roles that hire semi-qualified CAs
| Role | Typical employer | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Audit senior or audit assistant | Mid-sized and small CA firms, some larger firms | Run audit sections, lead junior articles, prepare working papers, draft observations, handle tax audit and GST audit assignments. See audit jobs. |
| Accounts executive, senior accountant, assistant manager accounts | Corporates, family-owned groups, start-ups | Books of account, bank and vendor reconciliations, GST and TDS compliance, month-end close support, MIS. See accounting jobs. |
| Record-to-report, procure-to-pay or order-to-cash analyst | Finance operations and capability centres | Journal entries, intercompany, fixed assets, reconciliations, invoice processing or collections for global clients, usually on an ERP. See record to report, accounts payable and order to cash jobs. |
| Tax or GST executive | CA firms, corporates, tax consultancies | GST returns and reconciliations, TDS returns, income tax computations, notices and replies, e-invoicing and e-way bill compliance. See GST jobs and tax jobs. |
| MIS or financial analyst | Corporates, consulting and outsourcing companies | Monthly reporting packs, variance analysis, budget tracking, dashboards; heavy Excel. |
| Finance executive in banking and NBFC operations | Banks, NBFCs, insurers | Loan operations, reconciliations, regulatory reporting support, credit documentation, branch accounting. |
| Internal audit or compliance assistant | Corporates, internal audit firms | Process walkthroughs, control testing, compliance checklists, SOP documentation. See internal audit jobs. |
The finance operations and capability centres deserve a special mention because they hire semi-qualified candidates in the largest numbers, train them on processes and systems, and promote on performance rather than on the qualification. Current openings at the main employers are on Accenture, Genpact, EXL and HCLTech, and the full set of roles that accept CA Inter candidates is on CA Inter and semi-qualified CA jobs.
What semi-qualified roles pay
Pay varies more by employer type and city than by anything else. As broad guides for 2026:
- Audit senior or assistant at a mid-sized CA firm: roughly ₹3 lakh to ₹5.5 lakh a year, higher in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru and at larger firms.
- Accounts executive or senior accountant in a corporate: roughly ₹3.5 lakh to ₹6 lakh, rising with the size of the company and ownership of the close.
- Analyst in a finance operations or capability centre: roughly ₹4 lakh to ₹7 lakh, with shift allowances on top for evening or night shifts, and faster increments for process ownership.
- Tax or GST executive: roughly ₹3.5 lakh to ₹6 lakh, more in consultancies handling litigation.
Two patterns matter. First, semi-qualified candidates earn clearly more than fresh commerce graduates in the same role because of articleship, but clearly less than qualified CAs, and the gap widens with seniority unless you build a specialisation. Second, the fastest way to raise pay on this track is depth: owning GST compliance for a group, running a record-to-report tower, or becoming the person who closes the books for an entity. Those roles are paid for responsibility, not for letters after the name. For comparison, qualified fresher packages are covered in CA fresher salary in India.
Working while attempting CA Final
Many candidates work full-time and continue attempting CA Final, and employers are used to it. A few practical points:
- Industrial training. ICAI permits industrial training in the final part of the articleship period with eligible organisations, which lets you gain company experience while still on the training track. Check the current rules and the approved period on icai.org before you commit, because the scheme has been revised.
- Exam leave. Larger corporates and capability centres often have formal study-leave policies; smaller firms decide case by case. Ask in the interview, in plain terms: “I plan to attempt CA Final in the next window; how does the team handle exam leave?” Employers prefer this to a surprise request two months in.
- Shift and study time. Night-shift operations roles pay more but leave less energy for study. Be honest with yourself about which you need more in the next year.
- Keep your articleship and training documentation in order. You will need it for the Final exam forms and for membership later.
If you decide not to continue CA
Stopping after Intermediate is a legitimate decision, and the professionals who make it well do two things: they stop apologising for it on the CV, and they pick a qualification or specialisation that fits the track they want.
- Cost and management accounting: the Indian CMA from ICMAI suits manufacturing finance, costing and plant controllership roles, and gives credit for parts of the CA syllabus. Read CA versus CMA for the comparison.
- IFRS-based reporting in multinational centres: ACCA from ACCA Global is widely accepted in capability centres and the Big 4 for reporting and advisory roles, with exemptions for CA Intermediate holders. Read CA versus ACCA.
- Business-facing finance: an MBA in finance from a good institute moves you towards FP&A, business finance and corporate roles; see MBA Finance jobs.
- US-facing work: the US CMA or CPA suits candidates in capability centres serving US businesses; see US CMA jobs and CPA jobs.
Whatever you choose, the articleship experience remains your main asset for the first few years. Commerce graduate openings on B.Com jobs and M.Com jobs, and early-career roles on finance fresher jobs, are also relevant. The accounting career paths guide maps the progression from each starting point.
Presenting a semi-qualified profile
State the facts clearly at the top of the CV: groups cleared and when, articleship firm and period, whether you are attempting Final and in which window, or that you have chosen a different path. Then let the work speak. Describe the audits you handled, the returns and filings you prepared, the reconciliations you owned, the clients’ industries and the software you used, with specifics. Recruiters search for terms such as GST, TDS, Ind AS, Tally, SAP and reconciliation, and a vague CV is invisible to them.
In interviews, expect questions tied to your articleship work and to practical scenarios: how you would reconcile a GST return with the books, how a TDS default is corrected, how you would approach an inventory count, what a month-end close checklist contains. Prepare two or three real examples and be ready to say what you would do differently. Our audit interview preparation guide covers the technical rounds in depth.
Growing on the semi-qualified track
The ceiling on this track is higher than most candidates assume, but it is reached through ownership. A common path over five years: start as an analyst or accounts executive, take ownership of one process or compliance calendar by year two, lead a small team or an entity close by year three or four, and move into a controllership, process-owner or compliance-lead role by year five. Each step is visible on a CV and each is paid. Candidates who add a relevant qualification along the way, or complete CA Final, accelerate the last steps.
Current openings that accept CA Inter, CA Final and semi-qualified candidates are on CA Inter and semi-qualified CA jobs, with city and company filters on job vacancies. Save your preferences once to receive daily alerts for new matching roles, and apply early; operations centres in particular fill roles from the first applications.
