About Big 4 Jobs in India

Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC each employ tens of thousands of people in India, and Chartered Accountants are the core of their audit, tax and deals practices. The networks work through a layered structure here: audit is performed by member firms registered with ICAI; tax, consulting, risk and transaction services run through separate entities; and large global delivery centres in Bengaluru, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kochi and other cities serve overseas member firms. A Big 4 vacancy can therefore be a client-facing India role or an internal global role, and the work, hours and growth path differ between the two.

Hiring runs in three streams. Newly qualified CAs arrive through ICAI campus placement, direct applications and conversion of article trainees. Lateral hiring brings CAs with two to ten years of experience into senior, manager and director roles, often with a specialism such as transfer pricing, financial due diligence, forensics or Ind AS advisory. The delivery centres recruit at scale across audit support, tax compliance and finance operations, including candidates without a CA.

What is changing in 2026: closer audit-quality scrutiny from NFRA, rapid growth in consulting, risk and technology-led work such as SAP and Oracle finance programmes, and the compliance workload of the Income-tax Act, 2025. Each firm also has its own hierarchy and title conventions, so compare the level and the service line on a listing rather than the brand alone.

Big 4 Jobs: frequently asked questions

Is one of the Big 4 better than the others for a Chartered Accountant?

Not as a network, but very much by service line, city and team. Each firm has practices that are stronger in India in particular areas, whether a tax specialism, risk consulting, deals or an industry, and that strength shifts with partner moves. The questions that predict your experience are narrower: which service line, which office, who leads the team, how large its client base is, and where people from that team went after three years. Ask those in interviews. Current openings by firm are on EY, Deloitte, KPMG and PwC.

What is the difference between an India practice role and a global delivery centre role?

An India practice role is client-facing: you work on Indian clients’ audits, tax matters or deals, travel to client sites and build a professional reputation in the Indian market. A delivery centre role supports overseas member firms: audit procedures, tax compliance, valuations or finance operations for clients in the US, UK or elsewhere, usually from a single office, sometimes on overseas hours. Delivery roles offer steadier hours, international standards and strong process training with less client exposure; practice roles offer the reverse. Both appear on this page; the listing’s entity and location tell you which it is.

How does lateral hiring into the Big 4 work for a CA with two to six years of experience?

Levels map roughly to post-qualification years: senior or assistant manager for two to four years, manager from four to six, with specialists sometimes placed higher. The process typically runs through screening by the firm’s talent team, a technical interview with a manager, a case or written exercise for advisory and deals roles, a partner or director round, and an HR discussion on package and notice period. Referrals from current employees shorten the first step considerably, and firms often buy out notice periods for roles they need to fill quickly, so ask.

What does the Big 4 interview process look like for freshers in 2026?

Campus and direct fresher hiring usually includes an online aptitude or technical test, a group discussion at some centres, a technical interview built around your articleship work and core standards, and an HR round. Expect questions on revenue recognition, leases, financial instruments, deferred tax, GST provisions and auditing standards, usually tied to what you listed on your CV, plus a situational question or two about client handling. The audit interview preparation guide works through the technical questions in detail.

What do the Big 4 pay CAs at each level?

Indicative bands for India practice roles in 2026, which vary by service line and city: newly qualified CAs roughly ₹7 lakh to ₹10 lakh in audit and tax and somewhat more in advisory and deals; three to four years roughly ₹12 lakh to ₹18 lakh; managers roughly ₹20 lakh to ₹30 lakh; senior managers above that, with directors and partners on a different structure. Variable pay and promotion cycles differ by firm, and delivery centre bands sit a little below practice bands at the same level. Treat these as ranges to sanity-check an offer, not as entitlements.

How bad is work-life balance, really?

It depends on the service line and the season. Statutory audit is intense around quarter-ends and the annual close; tax peaks around filing and return deadlines; deals follow transaction timelines, which are unpredictable. Outside those periods, hours are closer to normal, and delivery centre roles are steadier throughout the year. Utilisation targets and review culture are real, and attrition after two or three years is part of the model. Ask the interviewer about busy-season expectations for that specific team rather than relying on general reputation.

What exit options does Big 4 experience open after three to five years?

Plenty, which is the main reason CAs accept the hours. Audit leads to financial reporting, controllership and internal audit roles in industry and at banks’ India centres; tax to in-house tax, transfer pricing and GST roles; deals to corporate development, private equity support and investment banking; risk and consulting to industry transformation roles and start-ups. The guides on financial due diligence careers and transfer pricing careers describe two of the specialisations that travel best.

I am not a CA. Can I still get a Big 4 job?

Yes, in many teams. Tax, advisory, risk consulting and the delivery centres hire B.Com and M.Com graduates, MBA Finance candidates, ACCA and US CPA holders, CMAs and company secretaries, and the delivery centres recruit at scale for audit support, tax compliance and finance operations. Signing an audit report requires ICAI membership, but most positions do not. Relevant openings are collected on B.Com jobs, MBA Finance jobs, ACCA jobs and CPA jobs.
