Standard costing becomes variance analysis, inventory valuation becomes balance-sheet substantiation, and overhead allocation becomes cost-centre reporting, which is the vocabulary FP&A and business finance teams use. Lead with the decisions your numbers supported, such as a pricing change, a make-or-buy call or a plant budget. FP&A and business finance are the natural first moves; product control at a bank needs knowledge of markets and trade flows and takes longer to reach.

Controller interviews walk through the month-end close: accruals, prepayments, intercompany, reconciliations and the journal entries behind them, usually with a short Excel exercise and questions on IFRS or US GAAP basics. Product control adds daily profit and loss explanation, the trade lifecycle and how instruments are valued.
