You track revenue and margins for a product or business line, model unit economics such as customer acquisition cost and contribution per order, support pricing and promotion decisions, and prepare the monthly and quarterly numbers for leadership. Market and credit risk teams at banks, revenue and analytics-heavy FP&A teams at technology companies, and treasury analytics teams most often. You do not need to be a programmer, but being able to query and shape data yourself sets you apart. Interviews for risk roles also test statistics and measures such as value at risk; the FRM syllabus is a good reference.

Roles sit in grades or bands, and raises and promotions follow those bands. Two offers with similar CTCs at different grades are not equal, so ask which grade you are being offered and what the next one requires. Moves between teams are common after a year or two and are often the quickest way to change function.

Most finance centres sit along the Outer Ring Road, from Manyata Tech Park in the north to Bellandur and Sarjapur Road in the south-east, and in Whitefield further east; some banks and consulting firms are in the central business district. Teams serving US businesses can work into the evening at quarter-end, and some employers now expect staff in five days a week, so weigh the commute, the shift and the office policy together before choosing where to live.
